A modest single storey garden extension within a heritage conservation area designed to encapsulate a generous and established garden. The new pavilion structure echoes the weatherboard clad cottages of the area so that it reads as a stand alone house from the streetscape.

A rural cabin designed as a secondary dwelling to a smallholding. This compact ‘off-grid’ home is designed to meet complying development requirements and is targeting Passive House certification. The ‘Battenberg’ plan is organised around a central vestibule that keep circulation to a minimum and creates a diagonal flow through the living areas.

Kamilaroi Country

Set behind a federation end of terrace home in a heritage conservation area, this brick extension has a public interface with a narrow side and rear pedestrian lane. The project maximised its floor space potential by stepping the height of the brick box to the rear and introducing a double height light slot in the centre of the plan to maintain privacy from the lanes and surrounding neighbours.

This research project imagines what a typical Australian middle suburb could be if a few certain planning regulations were challenged with a detailed design led masterplan.

Community and design led plans would allow flexible, sustainable and affordable low rise high density housing. Planned around existing allotments so redevelopment is scaled to towards individual owners, small communities and builders to enable diverse and flexible fine grain housing.

A refurbishment of a large existing contemporary house on a steep northern sloping site into Careel Bay. The house required significant interventions to rectify defects, including structure and waterproofing. The interiors include finely crafted joinery and bespoke furniture.

Guringai Country

This project extends a 1920’s Californian bungalow in an Inner West conservation area. The pavilion addition provides a new double width living space with raking ceilings. The new structure echoes the existing stepped roof forms and plays with their triangular geometries with textural materials.

A small rooftop addition to an end of terrace dwelling in a heritage conservation area in the Inner West. The attic extension overlooks a vacant heritage substation site allowing a rare elevated balcony with distant views.

Alterations to an existing tall and narrow terrace house required a bridge to connect the existing living space with a new studio at the rear of the property above a garage. The bridge was a solution to provide accessibility for the owners and protect neighbour’s privacy.

This project is a contemporary interpretation of a Californian bungalow, situated in a sensitive heritage conservation area of large inter-war properties. The design follows the shallow pitched staggered roofs of this style. It increases in height towards the centre of the plan. The interiors utilise these roof profiles to create a series of tall sloping ceilings of various heights through.

Wangle Country

A discrete courtyard house utilises a central courtyard to trap winter sun, provide shelter from strong southerlies while maintaining stunning southerly views.

This small interior fit-out had to squeeze a lot into a small awkward space.  The flowing walls integrate storage and custom made furniture to leave as much clear space for physical movement.

A large smallholding family dwelling that nestles into the site’s steep north facing slope. Its linear arrangement of spaces across two levels are separated by an enfilade of 7 outdoor rooms that provide different functions and aspects. It serves as a working centre to the smallholding that will produce organic produce and stage cooking events. The home incorporates geothermal heating/cooling, 52kW solar system with batteries and an high performance envelope that will ensure the house is completely self sufficient during its lifetime.

Gadigal Country

The kitchen provides facilities and shelter for large functions and cooking demonstrations. The structure forms the edge of a large vegetable allotment and private garden. The building form echoes traditional barn forms. One side is an open shelter with reclaimed timber structure. The other side is solid with stained concrete enclosure.

Gandangara Country

A modest robust house that honours the true value of the common brick. It celebrates its inherent load bearing capabilities, sense of security, thermal mass, ease of adaption/flexibility with lime mortar and its familiar beauty. 

The single storey U shaped base allows detached, semi-detached and terraced street configurations. The load bearing brick walls support a flat engineered timber roof deck designed to allow rooftop extension and adaptability. This deck supports a roof pavilion and terraces surrounded by deep green roof planting. 

The house is arranged on a standard modular grid of individual internal lime washed brick rooms set apart from each other, with cavities of varying width that provide structural bracing, alcoves, service voids and generous layers of insulation for thermal and acoustic comfort. These chambers are enveloped by a single leaf of external brick chosen to suit local context or client's preference. 

The house has been designed to suit current client needs, however, rooms are suitably generic for any future change in use. Joinery is intended to be 'loose' to enable occupants to furnish each space with their own style or character. 

This concept for 200 apartments forms a courtyard typology apartment building to provide a tranquil central garden space for residents.

This concept for a new town square development, re-introduces a fine grain pedestrian priority street network with shops and food outlets.

This simple industrial farm structure has subtle details that elevate it above the normal. The walls are black stained concrete with pin stripe grooves that recall the blackened weatherboard structures of the past.

Gandangara Country

The design of the apartments was based on two separate courtyard blocks that enclosed a pair of lush sanctuary gardens. The gardens are connected by a communal landscape above a retail and parking podium on a busy urban street. Each apartment has an aspect into the internal courtyards. Rob Burton led the design whilst at Turner.

Gadigal Country

Designed in collaboration with artist Alberto Duman, Sutton Walk is a permanent light installation that captures the memory of the existing viaduct fabric, cardboard city history and markings.  It inverts and illuminates a replica image of the original brick wall that still exists behind the ceramic fritted glass.  Opposite the wall a mirrored glass monolith reflects passers by until their gaze is lost in a ghost of light.

The first stage of a development of 600 apartments forming a new urban centre for the area. The building design was inspired by nearby weatherboard cottages. This textural and coastal character was consistently applied to apartment exteriors, interiors and public spaces. The design and team was led by Rob Burton whilst at Turner. The new multi storey building for the Garvan Institute and St. Vincents and Mater Hospital provides an innovative facility that brings together patients and researchers in a light, open and tranquil environment. Rob Burton led the design of all interiors and key facade components whilst a Practice Director at BVN.

Freedom shells are innovative flexible apartment units based on proprietary precast construction technology. The design allows unit layout flexibility without impacting adjoining units providing affordable choice and generous space.

Extensive refurbishment of the Barbican Centre’s foyers and art gallery. The existing grade II fabric required an appropriately bold intervention to improve the centres notorious way finding issues. Rob Burton led the design while at Allford Hall Monaghan Morris in collaboration with Studio Myerscough, Cartledge Levene and Minds Eye.

This 170 bed hostel was designed for a charity that provides affordable accommodation for key workers and students in central London. The rooms spiral around a central courtyard to fit snugly within existing social housing and a railway viaduct. The rooms facing the railway are protected by a large zinc shingle corridor wall that creates an acoustic and visual barrier. This award winning design solution was led by Rob Burton whilst an Associate at MJP Architects.
